Motorway Extension Promises New Glasgow Hotel

The latest plan by Ashfield Land for the outskirts of Glasgow is this mixed-use development called Two74 to stand on the edge of Junction 2 of the M74 Motorway outside the city.
Already approved by South Lanarkshire Council, the 20-acre project on Cambuslang Road consists of of an anchor podium to be occupied by a large supermarket plus a collection of other retail outlets including a 5,000 square metre sports outlet, restaurants, a nine screen multiplex cinema
Topping the podium will be a 9-storey hotel tower with 170 bedrooms aimed clearly at those on long drives who need somewhere out of town to rest for the night. As one would expect for such a scheme, there will be a large amount of parking involved - some 800 spaces in total.
Part of the appeal for Ashfield Land when it comes to the development of the site is that the M74 is one of the main transport routes south of Glasgow and effectively separates the urban sprawl of Motherwell from Hamilton. It also provides the main transport artery south from Glasgow to the English border and is being extended as far into central Glasgow as possible. Until recently the M74 stopped at the Glasgow East Investment Park but once finished will be only a couple of miles from the city centre.
With the motorway already advancing rapidly, work is expected to begin on the project in 2011 with it opening in the latter half of 2013.
